Which fibres?

We have a wide variety of fibres all of which are suitable for hand spinning and the majority are also suitable for felt making. Merino fibres are most popular as we can supply in a wide range of ready dyed colours . It’s a soft fibre suitable for all kinds of uses but especially for garments and it felts easily.

Blue Faced Leicester is an extremely versatile fibre, excellent for all uses, felts readily and comes in three natural shades: white, oatmeal and black.

How much fibre do I need?

It depends very much on the project and the number of wool layers required for the felt, but here is a very basic guide

We recommend three layers of wool, each layer laid at 90 degrees to the previous layer. To lay out at the size of an A4 piece of paper we reckon you need approximately 25g of fibre per student. Bear in mind that the finished size will be smaller as the wool will shrink between 30% - 40% on average.
